Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
IAQ Consultants are leading consultancy for the assessment of indoor air quality. This includes producing indoor air quality plans for developments in compliance with new building standards, investigating air quality within the workplace, supporting COSHH risk assessments, developing risk assessment tools and researching indoor air quality within homes. Our team developed the risk assessment approach in the Institute of Air Quality Management’s guidance on indoor air quality.
It is an employer’s duty to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their employees and to safeguard others, principally the public, who might be exposed to risks from an employer’s activities. Employers must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this (Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974).
In particular, employers have a duty to protect their staff from exposure to hazardous substances and to take appropriate action (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002 as amended). Substances hazardous to health include chemical compounds, mixtures of compounds, micro-organisms and natural materials (e.g. dust).
Employers are required to assess the risks in the workplace under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Risk assessments should be carried out that address all risks that might cause harm in a workplace, including from air pollution.
