Research
The recent report from the Government’s Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG) highlighted the poor knowledge on air quality in buildings in the UK. It is not only knowledge that is lacking, but also product standards to control the emissions of common indoor pollutants and indoor air quality standards.
Further research in indoor air quality is needed in the UK to address this and our team are regularly involved in undertaking research for indoor air quality in partnership with a range of research organisations. IAQ Consultants can undertake or support studies with universities, NGOs, regulators, and research institutes.
Our R&D services include:
- Partnerships with research organisations
- Monitoring air quality in public and private buildings
- Developing innovative indoor risk assessment tools

Our team has provided services for a number of research projects. Most recently IAQ Consultants has been undertaking long-term monitoring of pollution in multiple houses in London as part of an NGO project investigating linkages between building insulation and ventilation with indoor air quality.
Prior to this, our team undertook a detailed ethnographic assessment of indoor air quality and occupant behaviours for 33 households in London. This involved indoor monitoring of a range of pollutants and investigated the effects of typical household behaviours upon air quality, such as cooking, cleaning, and smoking, as well as refurbishment, outdoor ingress from local construction sites, house to house transfer, and varied fuelled appliances (e.g. gas vs electric). This also considered effects of temperature, humidity, and mould, and set out recommended measures to improve indoor air quality for the residents.
“I just want to say thank you so much for sending this data over on Saturday. Just because I was working, I did not expect you to respond and send this so much appreciated!! Thanks for going out of your way to help 😊”
